The diverse terrains of Karnataka have always been a source of joy for hikers and nature enthusiasts, drawing large numbers of visitors. However, in a move to prioritise eco-tourism, the Karnataka government has implemented restrictions on the number of trekkers allowed at various locations throughout the state, capping the daily access to 300 trekkers on all trails. This initiative is designed to address overcrowding issues and safeguard the environment. The need for such measures became apparent when approximately 6,000 people converged on Kumara Parvatha within a few days in January, leading to disorder and safety issues.
The Environment Minister, Eshwar Khandre, has also unveiled an online ticket booking portal for trekking routes across the state. Now, with just a few clicks at https://aranyavihaara.karnataka.gov.in, you can secure your tickets for some of Karnataka's most breathtaking trekking sites. Choose from five trails: Kumara Parvatha (via Subrahmanya), Bidahalli to Kumara Parvatha, Bidahalli-Kumara Parvatha-Subrahmanya, Chamarajanagar-Nagamale, and Talacauvery-Nishani Motte.
The government has confirmed that by the end of October, an additional 40 trekking routes will be added to the portal. This update will also facilitate bookings for wildlife and boat safaris as major national parks and tiger reserves prepare to reopen for the season.
The government is also taking decisive action to minimise the environmental impact of plastic waste along trekking routes and forest paths. As part of this initiative, plastic items, including water bottles, carry bags and food packaging, will be strictly prohibited. Trekkers must responsibly dispose of these items at designated checkpoints, with thorough inspections to verify adherence to the regulations. Those with banned items, such as plastic bottles, liquor bottles, cigarettes, and lighters, will be subject to fines.
In the past, private companies used to buy many tickets at once, making it difficult for genuine trekkers to secure tickets. The new portal requires trekkers to upload their government-issued ID cards when making ticket reservations to address this issue. Furthermore, each phone number is now allowed to reserve up to 10 tickets, simplifying the process for group bookings. Additionally, the portal offers flexible cancellation policies: trekkers who cancel seven days in advance will receive a full refund, while those who cancel closer to the date will receive a partial refund with a deduction.
