In an exciting development for travel enthusiasts, the skies between Chennai and Sri Lanka's vibrant Jaffna city have become even more accessible. India's Alliance Air has ramped up its flight frequency from four times a week to a daily service, enhancing travel and trade connections between the two countries. So, whether you're yearning to delve into Jaffna's cultural richness or explore Chennai's vibrant streets, this seamless air connection opens doors to unforgettable experiences.

The announcement to increase the flights' frequency was made by Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, during the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) annual convention held in Colombo.

New Possibilities

With daily commercial flights in operation between Chennai and Jaffna International Airport (JIA) in the northern region, the potential for seamless travel and cultural exchange has soared to new heights. The inaugural flight touched down in Jaffna, welcomed by Chief Airport Manager Aruna Rajapaksa and a wave of excitement. The flights, operated by Alliance Air, utilize their ATR72 aircraft, accommodating up to 70 passengers comfortably. With timely arrivals at 1130 am and departures to Chennai at 1230 pm, travellers can enjoy convenient travel options designed to suit their schedules.

Increasing Demands Prompted Change

"Alliance Air is set to commence daily scheduled operations between Jaffna and Chennai, starting from 16th July 2023," stated a press release by Sri Lanka's Airport and Aviation Services. The demand for flights to Jaffna prompted the decision to upgrade from the initially planned four flights per week to a daily service. This enhancement in-flight connectivity reflects the growing desire to explore Jaffna's wonders and experience its vibrant Tamil culture.

The Jaffna International Airport, developed with Indian assistance, has evolved into a bustling hub that caters to an increasing number of domestic and international travellers. The resumption of flight services between Chennai and Jaffna in December 2022 after a hiatus caused by the pandemic has been a significant milestone. It marked the revival of tourism, a crucial source of foreign exchange earnings for Sri Lanka, which had suffered due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis.
