OT Staff

An exciting new marine venture awaits you in Scotland. The region is home to more than a quarter of the world&rsquos whale and dolphin species and one of the few places in Europe where you can catch a glimpse of bottlenose and common dolphins, harbour porpoise, minke whales and killer whales.

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trail&nbsppromises a perfect balance of picturesque landscapes from where you can site whales, dolphins and porpoises. The trail will run along the west coast of Scotland and include stunning destinations like the lighthouse on the Butt of Lewis, Eilean Glas on the Isle of Scalpay, and the extreme westerly point of Ardnamurchan Lighthouse. Around 30 such land-based viewing spots are sprinkled across both the mainland and islands. And its not just whales and dolphins, if you&rsquore lucky enough you might spot basking sharks, seals and many other species of wildlife.

The initiative was given a grant of &pound200,000 by the Coastal Communities Fund. The management of Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust&nbsphopes to welcome people from all walks of life. They people to experience the thrill of watching a fin breaking the surface in the distance, and the challenge of identifying the species of whales, sharing that experience with others, and learning about the threats these animals face. The initiative aims to enjoy exploring the region&rsquos unique nature, culture and history, and to inspire visitors to support marine conservation. A map and website of the Trail has been created to guide tourists.

This venture is likely to boost the local economy supporting small towns and villages through sustainable eco-tourism, providing educational opportunities and improving communication between coastal areas.
