US Airport Traffic Rising Despite Surge in COVID-19 Cases

Even the recent surge in coronavirus infections doesn&rsquot seem to dissuade Americans from seeing their travel plans through to the end.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, more than a million people passed through the United States&rsquo airport security check-points on December 18, 19, and 20.

In November, the conclusion of a Thanksgiving weekend witnessed a multiplication of COVID-19 cases across the US. A large number of people were travelling around the country then. Since Thanksgiving, this is the first time airports have screened more than a million people in one day.

Now, a lot of hospitals are filled to the brim as the US experiences its largest coronavirus outbreak since March.

Statistics reveal that the seven-day rolling average of newly reported infections in the US has risen from about 176,000 a day just before Thanksgiving to more than 2,15,000 a day.

Lockdowns aren&rsquot in effect in the country, but a few areas have been issued stay-at-home orders in a bid to contain the virus. 99% of California&rsquos population, for instance, has been advised to stay in with the exemption of movement for work, exercise, and shopping. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has also issued an advisory declaring that &ldquopostponing travel and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from COVID-19&rdquo.

Since the upcoming holiday season covers a larger time-span, it is prophesied that the number of people travelling during late December will exceed 85 million. Even though this is just one-third of last year&rsquos statistics, it is still a tremendous movement of people amid a pandemic.
