Shanghai Gets a Stunning Digital Art Museum

OT Staff

teamLab, a Japanese art and tech collective, is opening its second permanent digital art museum, in Shanghai. With its inaugural day on November 5, 2019, visitors can expect a mesmerising world of colours, sceneries and unusual concepts. A veritable pixel paradise, the artworks flow and meld into each other, influenced not just by their neighbours, but also visitor movements.

This 'Borderless' museum comes on the heels of the company's first digital art museum, established last year at the MORI Building in Tokyo. That teamLab enterprise had turned MORI into the most-visited single-artist museum in the world, edging past Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum and the Museo Picasso in Barcelona.

With 50-plus digital artworks spread out over 6,000 sq ft (some of which will be unveiled to the public for the first time), this Shanghai iteration could be a step above to beat their own record.

For example, their iconic 'Forest of Resonating Lamps' is being built at 1.5 times the scale of its sister version in Tokyo. Another exhibit is a light sculpture made out of thousands of moving beams. To avoid heating up a room with all that energy, explains teamLab founder Toshiyuki Inoko, a special kind of light beam had to be developed for over a year.

Until you can grab tickets, here's a sneak peek at the captivating exhibits at teamLab Borderless Shanghai
