Due to carpeting work on the runway, Pune airport will remain shut during the night for one year. The work is scheduled to begin from October 26 for which all flight operations between 8pm and 8am have been cancelled.
"The recarpeting work of runway is going to start from October 26 and will be on for around one year. Since the work is planned during the night time, the runway will be shut for flight operations between 8pm and 8am," Pune Airport Director Kuldip Singh, as reported by news agency PTI.
All landings and take offs for almost 10 flights have been distributed and rescheduled during the day time to allow smooth and fast completion of the carpeting and repair work of the runway. The heavy traffic inflow to Pune has also led the Airport Authority of India (AAI) plan a multi-level car parking facility.
The airport, maintained and run by the AAI, is a civil enclave which has both domestic and international terminals. Flights mostly to west Asian countries take off from here. An increase in air traffic has led to expansion of the airport and construction of a new terminal and runway.
