Thailand has launched a Yacht Quarantine programme that allows tourists with a negative coronavirus test to spend all their time on a yacht or small cruise liner in Phuket.

The campaign is aimed at resurrecting the nation's troubled tourism sector.

The pandemic had seen the arrival of travellers in the major tourist destination drop like a stone from 40,000-50,000 per day to just a hundred per day.

Launched on Monday, the government hopes that the new approach will deliver 1.8 billion baht (&pound42m, $58m) in yacht tourism revenue.

Throughout January, the country followed a scheme that allowed guests to spend their quarantine on a golf course. The hotel quarantine plan is due to commence in April or May in the famous regions of Phuket, Krabi and Chiang Mai.

The scheme has begun to accept yachts for a trial period and in a few weeks about 100 yachts are supposed to start operating. Visitors will be given a smart wristband that detects vitals, as well as temperature and location. The machine can transmit data also at sea within a radius of 10 km.

Earlier this month, Thailand's tourism minister had shared that he would implement a quarantine policy for tourists in popular holiday areas, such as beaches. The nation which prohibited international visitors in March the year before, is steadily reopening its national boundaries again.
