Odisha's Kapileswar Siva Temple, which was recently declared as monument of national importance, has been included in the Archaeological Survey of India's (ASI) list of protected monuments.
Confirming the development, Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sadangi thanked Union Minister Kishan Reddy for bringing the ancient temple under ASI's immediate care and protection. Earlier, the Ministry of Culture had declared it as an ancient monument of national importance.
On May 5, a gazette notification was issued to include the Kapileshwar Temple in the list of Protected Monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India, to ensure temple's proper maintenance and preservation

With Lord Shiva as the presiding deity, the temple is considered one of the oldest existing temples in Odisha, and is thronged by devotees from all over the country.
Located about 1 km from the 11th-century Lingaraj Temple of Bhubaneswar, Kapileswar is known for its Kalinga-style architecture, which reflects state's cultural and religious roots.
 The temple is believed to have been renovated in the 14th century by Gajapati Kapilendra Dev, founder of the Suryavamsa Gajapati empire. Its exquisite carvings and impressive architectural work are a reminder of the centuries-old custom of Indian temple buildings. This temple is located on the serene northern bank of the Manikarnika reservoir, spanning 44 square meters.
Interestingly, the popular tourist attraction is established alongside 34 other ancient monuments within the temple's vicinity. In the heart of the shrine stands a sacred Siva-lingam, representing the presiding holy being. This sacred shrine holds a significant position as an outpost of the Lingaraja temple, which serves as the central hub of worship.
