The global coronavirus outbreak has put events around the globe in a difficult spot. While some of the festivals have completely been called off until the next year, such as the Oktoberfest, others have moved online, like the summer solstice event at the Stonehenge.

Keeping in mind the pandemic, the Macao International Fireworks Display contest has also been called off this year. The cancellation of the event, originally slated to be held in September and October this year, was announced by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

Organised by MGTO, the Macao International Fireworks Display Contest invited outstanding fireworks teams from across the world Macao every year. However, owing to the pandemic, Macao as well as other participating countries have strict border control measures in place.

Unable to confirm the line-up of contestants and keeping in mind that the transportation of fireworks materials and related equipment will be affected, the MGTO deemed the situation to be unfavourable for the event.

Other events such as the 8th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo have also been postponed to September. The Macao Light Festival, originally held every December, will also take place earlier, between late September and October if the situation permits.
