ChandigarhManali Highway Blocked

A major landslide has caused a highway blockage for almost two days

OT Staff

For the past two days, the Chandigarh&ndashManali highway has been blocked due to massive landslides making traffic movement impossible.

A large number of vehicles have been stuck on either side of the road most of which were either going to Kullu from Mandi, or vice versa. The bottleneck condition has forced many to walk to Mandi from the highway.

On Saturday, early morning around 8.30 am, large boulders and chunks of rocks came rolling down the hills and caused major damages, though no casualties have been reported yet.

The traffic has been diverted via Kataula between Mandi and Kullu district for the movement of light vehicles until the Chandigarh-Manali highway is restored.

Though clearing of debris is on in full swing, the task is quite herculean as the area is extremely prone to landslides, making it difficult to work at night. Work to clear the road is on full swing in the cordoned off area.

Landslides are pretty common in this part of the country during the monsoon.
