Kargil is going to be developed as a world-class adventure tourism hub, announced Prahlad Singh Patel, the Union Tourism and Culture Minister, on National Tourism Day.

A winter sports institute, a snow ski institute, and some other adventure sports facilities - these are all going to come up pretty soon in Kargil, and will be similar to (and in affiliation with) Gulmarg's Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM).

The upcoming winter sports institute will also provide various facilities and classes such as skiing, ice hockey and mountaineering which will be taught by locals.

Apart from skiing and ice hockey, tourists can also avail of hiking, rock climbing, mountaineering and trekking. The aim is to put Kargil on the map of winter sports events in India, and abroad.

It was also decided to identify and earmark snow ski slopes at Naktul area near Kargil town, Lamochan and Goshan area in Drass, and in Sankoo and Panikhar.

It was also decided to host a national level ice hockey championship at Drass Ice Hockey Rink this winter.
