Indore in Madhya Pradesh has ranked first, yet again, in a survey done by the Central government.

The survey involved reviewing cities with more than a population of 10 lakhs. The 4th edition of the survey covered 4,237 cities and Indore has retained the title of the Cleanest City in the last three years.

While Indore ranked the first Kolkata and Howrah ranked the last.

In the first quarter, that covers a period from April to June, Bhopal was ranked second followed by Surat in Gujarat. While in the second quarter, that covered a period from July to September, Rajkot in Gujarat bagged the second position, followed by Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra.

In cities with a population less than 10 lakh, Jamshedpur in Jharkhand has bagged the first position. According to the report, the primary goal of all Swachh Survekshans is to encourage large scale citizen participation and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities to be a better place to live in.

The focus for Swachh Survekshan 2019 was sustainability. The measurement indicators within the Survekshan were redesigned to capture whether the initiatives taken by the cities were sustainable in the long run or not.

The cities were on ranked on four indicators, collection of data from online government portal, direct observation, citizen feedback as well as certifications for garbage free cities and open defecation free cities, each accounting for 25% weightage.
