Finger puppet witch

Don--t let her wooden features fool you into doubting her malevolence

Vandana Mohindra

It must have been the witching hour in Steinau an der Stra&szlige when I ducked into the old royal stables and found &mdash not horses &mdash but a marionette theatre called Die Holzk&oumlppe. Meaning &ldquothe wooden heads,&rdquo this is where three generations of the Magersuppe family honed their craft from 1924, playing Grimm&rsquos fairytales on many a string. While Faust and the Devil contemplated eternal damnation on stage, I found this little puppet witch (&euro 3) and stuck her on my finger. Don&rsquot let her wooden features fool you into doubting her malevolence, for she could be one of the three horrible hags toiling over Macbeth&rsquos troubles, or the cleverest witch at Hogwarts, or even Don Henley&rsquos witchy woman, all raven hair and ruby lips. Just waggle your puppet and you&rsquoll find your inner witch.
