With a score of 56.1 and 54.4, respectively, New Delhi and Mumbai ranked among the first 50 on the global Safe Cities Index 2021, though a long way off from overall topper Copenhagen (82.4 points).&nbspThe top 10 cities from the Index are Copenhagen, Toronto, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Wellington, Hong Kong, Melbourne, and Stockholm.

The Safe Cities Index 2021 was recently published by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), part of The Economist Group. This NEC Corporation sponsored report is based on the fourth iteration of the index, which ranked 60 cities across 76 indicators including digital, health, infrastructure, personal and environmental security.

New Delhi was ranked 48 and Mumbai 50 among the 60 cities. New Delhi was preceded by Johannesburg (56.2), while Riyadh (55.1, 49th) was placed between the two Indian cities. Mumbai was followed by Manila (52.).

Upsetting the common perception that Mumbai is safer than New Delhi, on the &lsquopersonal security&rsquo front, New Delhi ranked 41st (52.8) while Mumbai ranked 50th (48.2). Copenhagen was the list topper. In the &lsquodigital security&rsquo category, New Delhi ranked 48th (47.5) while Mumbai ranked 53rd (45.4). The top position was bagged by Sydney.

Mumbai (44th) lagged New Delhi (40th) in &lsquohealth security&rsquo with the top position in this category going to Tokyo. New Delhi ranked 44th&nbspin &lsquoinfrastructure security&rsquo while Mumbai ranked 48th. The top position was bagged by Hong Kong. However, on the &lsquoenvironmental security&rsquo front, New Delhi (49th) lagged Mumbai (46th). The category topper was Wellington.

However, many would tend to disagree with the list which labels Delhi as a safe city, especially when it comes to women's safety. According to the National Crime Record Bureau, Kolkata is the safest city in India for women&mdashfor two successive years now.&nbspLaste year, we set about asking women from all walks of life about their favourite parts of Kolkata. We asked our respondents what their go-to spots in the city are. Why is North Kolkata the favourite of virtually everybody We asked them to name spots where they like to eat and shop at the most, and what it is about the sights and sounds of the legendary city that women love.
