Exhibition on Medicine and Healing in India

Know about the history and contemporary practice of human health at the exhibition at CSMVS in Mumbai

If you are a history buff, a health freak or simply curious, drop in at this unique exhibition at Mumbai&rsquos leading museum, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS). Formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum, it is holding an exhibition titled Tabiyat Medicine and Healing in India, until March 28, 2016. The exhibition is being organised in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust, London.
The exhibition will examine the history and contemporary practice of sustaining human health in India.  The display includes antiquities and contemporary material culture such as sculptures, clothing, textiles, wrestling clubs, books, everyday objects (combs and foot scrubbers), medical instruments, domestic objects, oil paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, plaques and board games (including a late 18th century snakes and ladders game board). The exhibition covers four generic locations The Shrine &ndash to encounter the role of spiritual belief in healing The Home &ndash examining life cycle and the family as the key transmitter of values and practical knowledge for living well and living long The Street &ndash charting public health, the hidden histories of health commerce and cultural practices such as chewing paan and The Clinic &ndash treating India as a key site in world history for inquiry into the nature of body and mind and for different analytical models of understanding, representing and treating the body.
