The Lakadong Valley in Meghalaya's scenic West Jaintia Hills is well-known for its unique turmeric&mdashLakadong Turmeric. Because of favourable soil, temperature, and environmental factors, this wonder spice has an extraordinarily high curcumin level.

 The History  

Turmeric's therapeutic benefits are attributed to the presence of a component known as 'curcumin'. Lakadong turmeric is said to have a substantially greater curcumin content than regular turmeric. This implies it is more effective and provides more health advantages than ordinary haldi (as turmeric is known in Hindi).

Lakadong Turmeric was protected with a Geographical Indication (GI) in 2015. This native spice originated in Northeast India and is grown on tiny family farms, using traditional agricultural practices and techniques.

Did you know that Jaintia Hills' Trinity Saioo, a champion of Meghalaya's Lakadong turmeric, was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 for mobilising up to 800 farmers from Mulieh village to form self-help organisations to cultivate the native spice and strengthen the local economy She is a school teacher by trade and was instrumental in convincing the state government to start the "Lakadong Turmeric Mission," which aims to increase the production of local turmeric.
