Pranay Jain

Get ready to experience an adventure-sports festival like no other, during the five-day Chambal River Floating Festival, on the Gandhisagar Dam, in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh, from 1st to 5th February. Post the festival, the tent city, set up for tourists, will remain operational for three months, while the adventure sports will continue for another six months.

Festive Line-up

The serene environment of the Gandhisagar Dam will take on a celebratory aura during the Floating Festival, which will have a floating stage, market, boat spa, safari, and live music and performances. The festival will allow you to leave behind the hustle and bustle of the city and daily life and have fun during your stay in the luxury camps.

Reservoirs And Rivers

Constructed on the Chambal River, the Gandhisagar Dam has been the gem of Mandsaur and commenced power generation and distribution in late 1960. Gandhi Sagar Power Station is 65-metre-long and 56-feet-wide and now supplies electricity throughout the district, as well as to far-off places in the interior of Madhya Pradesh and in the neighbouring state of Rajasthan. The Chambal River, with its own vast store of folklore, originates in the Vindhya Ranges in Madhya Pradesh and continues into Rajasthan and then on to Uttar Pradesh, where it joins the Yamuna River.

Deep-rooted

Mandsaur has been a locus for human settlement for centuries, and its extensive treasure trove of ruins includes the famous Mandsaur pillars. These are at the 6th-century Yashodharman vijayastambha site and are also called the Mandsaur victory pillar or the Sondhni pillar site. The region is believed to have first settled as a network of ten villages, hence the suffix &lsquodasaur&rsquo, a variation of Dashapura. The other historical sites are the remains of some palaces, such as those of Laduna and Sitamau. Then there is the Dashapura Fort, the Dharamarajeshwar, a Brahmanical rock-cut temple, Buddhist caves, and prehistoric painted rock shelters. You must visit the Yashodharman Archeological Museum, which has some magnificent sculptures from the Hinglajgarh Fort. Other sites to see are the Mandsaur Fort, the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, and the Telia Talab.
