International airports are competing with each other to provide the best luxury services for the benefit of passengers, especially those compelled to spend long layovers. But did you know some airports/airlines/tourism boards and even private operators have city tour packages for those spending long hours in transit at the airport. Some are free, some paid. So why not go on these tours and see the city
Here is our list of five aiports where you may avail the layover city tour.
However, do remember, to go on these tours, passengers have to fulfill international entry and othe rules, know about the time required to commute to and from the airport, especially during peak traffic hours, etc.
Istanbul
Flying Turkish Airlines with a connecting international flight in Istanbul, and six to 24 hours of layover time in your hands, then why not avail the free city tour offered by them Passengers may sign up for Touristanbul package at the Hotel Desk at the international arrivals terminal of Istanbul Airport. If you are flying Turkish Airlines, you may opt for a paid tour offered by private agencies, such as Istanbul Layover Tours.
Taipei
Transfer or transit passengers passing through Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and with seven to 24 hours at their disposal may opt for a free city tour which cover select sites depending on the time of the day. Passengers fulfilling the required terms and conditions may register at the Tourist Service Centre at the Arrival Lobby of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. A limited number of seats are available for advance online booking.
Kuala Lumpur
Although the Kuala Lumpur International Airport does not offer any city tour, you may go on a tour by yourself using the city&rsquos Hop On Hop Off Bus tours. However, remember, it takes about an hour to reach the heart of the city from the airport in normal traffic. So budget for adequate commute time to and from the airport before planning. The double decker air conditioned buses have designated stops and cover the major landmarks. Night tours are also available. For more details, see here.
Seoul
Although the city tour from Incheon Airport is on hold for the moment, according to the airport&rsquos website, the tour will resume from 2023. So await the announcement. Meanwhile, you may enjoy the airport&rsquos digital and other arts exhibitions which showcase modern and futuristic K-culture.
Doha
Discover Qatar, the destination management company of Qatar Airways, offers a Doha city tour to transit passengers with minimum eight hours at their disposal. Those with transit time of two or more, may go on a Discover the Art of the Airport with an expert guide. However, the tours will not be available during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 (November 20 and December 2, 2022). For more details, see here.
Note Narita Airport in Japan and Changi Airport in Singapore have kept their city tours for transit passengers on hold.
