If you have been dreaming of a beachside vacation but don't have much time, these weekend getaways in Karnataka make for an ideal escape. While they may be up to an eight-hour drive away, they are perfect for a short and sweet trip with your friends and family over the weekend. So, don't forget to pack your sunglass and sunscreen, and get going this weekend to one of these beaches just at a few hours' drive.
This glorious stretch is located approximately a seven-hour drive away from Bangalore, in the coastal city of Mangalore. While it is still popular among road trippers, with many families flanking the shore to catch a stunning sunset, the beach is clean and fairly less populated than Mangalore's popular Panambur beach. If you enjoy water sports, the waves at this beach are ideal for surfing.
The spot is surrounded by facilities such as parking lots and a few eateries. And more interestingly, just a few miles ahead is the Tannirbhavi Tree Park, where you can stroll while exploring the many species of plants particular to the Western Ghats.
Getting There: Approximately 357 km (7 hours) by road, or one can take a train to Mangalore Junction, 12 kms away from the beach. Mangalore Airport operates over 20 flights daily and buses too, ply frequently to Bangalore.
Located 6 km from Udupi, Malpe Beach is pristine, less crowded and perfect for a quiet day out, with the gushing waves rendering the perfect background score. If you wish to experience the beauty of the sea from a different vantage point, head to the nearby St Mary's Island, also a go-to spot for picnics. But if you wish to spend more time basking in the sun on the shore, head towards the north of Malpe Beach to another secluded spot at Padukere Beach. You can get your adrenaline rush at both beaches by enjoying a banana boat ride or parasailing.
Getting There: Approximately 410 km (8 hours) by road. Overnight trains and buses will take you to the nearby cities of Manipal or Udupi.
A trip to Karwar is assured to be a pleasant surprise. Not popular among travellers, Karwar Beach lends itself beautifully to nature as it is clean, untouched and akin to paradise in many ways. The never-ending shoreline shines its best during the golden hour. And adding to the experience is the fresh seafood preparations sold by local joints sparsely dotting the beach. While here, you can also participate in water sporting activities, such as surfing, or even swim in its calm waters. If you wish to explore other beaches around, head to Devbagh Beach, the rocky Binaga Beach, the black sand Tilmati Beach, and the more active Majali or Alligaddha Beach. Just ahead of Goa, this place offers a quiet privacy.
Getting There: Approximately 520 km (9 hours) by road. One can also fly to Dabolim International Airport and choose to drive down further South.
If you want a Goa equivalent but slightly closer, Om Beach at Gokarna checks the box off perfectly. Fringed by cliffs crowded by buzzing shacks and cafes, Om Beach is a popular spot among youngsters. During the day, you can gaze endlessly at the horizon, go for hikes, and or enjoy the roaring waves by taking on activities like surfing or jet-skiing, and as the sun begins to set, fix yourself a spot at one of the cafes perched on the cliff that oversees the ocean. There are multiple budget-friendly options around the beach to stay on your weekend getaway here. For a more serene experience, you can also drive down to Kudle or Kumta Beaches nearby.
Getting There: Located approximately 482 km (8 hours) from Bengaluru and 230 kilometers from Mangaluru. The closest airport is in Goa, about 150 kilometers away. Ankola is the nearest railway station, only 19 kilometers from Gokarna. To get to Om Beach from Gokarna city, you can easily hire an auto-rickshaw or taxi.
