Waquar Habib

The film society culture began in India around the period of the nation’s independence from imperial powers. The first film society, Calcutta Film Society, was established in Kolkata by a dynamic group of individuals, among whom was Satyajit Ray. Other film societies popped up rampantly across the country. Soon, places like Bombay, Madras, Patna, Agra and a few others joined the ranks of cities with film societies.

Following these events, the Federation of Film Societies of India (FSSI) in December of 1959 was made up by six film clubs namely, Calcutta Film Society, Delhi Film Society, Bombay Film Society, Madras Film Society, Patna Film Society and Roorkee Film Society. This film movement stressed promoting “good cinema” instead of mainstream melodramatic films.

If you enjoy parallel films and foreign arthouse cinema, you can explore the many film clubs, auditoriums and mingle with other cinephiles within Delhi. During your free time, you can always look up the screening schedules of various locations in the city and enjoy the films on a pocket-friendly budget, as admission to these screenings is generally free of cost.
