Madhya Pradesh is noted for its rich history, cultural richness, and natural beauty. While major tourist attractions here such as Khajuraho, Gwalior, and Bhopal draw visitors from all over the world, there are countless hidden jewels in Madhya Pradesh waiting to be discovered. These lesser-known destinations provide a distinct vacation experience and highlight the state's hidden riches. Mandsaur is one such site. It is situated on an upland plateau along the Sau River, a tributary of the Chambal River, in northwestern Madhya Pradesh.

The Dharmarajeshwara temple is a rock-cut temple site located around 100 km from Mandsaur. The complex, which comprises well-preserved Buddhist caves and a Hindu shrine, is somewhat similar to Maharashtra's rock-cut cultural monuments of Ellora.

The temple construction dates back to the 8th century and was initially a Vishnu shrine before being converted into a Shiva temple. As a result, the sanctum sanctorum contains both a Harihara icon and a shivalinga.
