Vietnam's surfing scene has something for everyone, whether you are a beginner looking for wide beaches or an experienced surfer seeking secret bays with big breaks. If you're planning a trip to Vietnam, here's your guide to the best spots to ride the waves. Thanks to its expansive beaches, diverse climate, and vibrant surf culture, Vietnam has steadily become a popular destination for surfers.

Mui Ne

Mui Ne, Vietnam

Mui Ne, located in southeastern Vietnam, is often regarded as the country's premier destination for surfing and water sports. Its consistent waves and warm weather attract surfers from around the globe to this vibrant beach town. The main beach in Mui Ne stretches along the South China Sea and is ideal for surfing from November to March when the winds create waves suitable for novice and experienced surfers. In addition to surfing, Mui Ne is an excellent location for various water activities due to its shallow waters and sandy beaches. You can easily rent equipment or receive professional instruction from several surf schools in the area. Mui Ne offers a wide range of options for thrill-seekers, including kitesurfing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, making it a versatile destination for adventure lovers.

Da Nang

My Khe Beach in Da Nang, Vietnam

Da Nang is a vibrant coastal city in central Vietnam, renowned for its beautiful beaches, delicious seafood, and lively nightlife. The top surfing spot in Da Nang is My Khe Beach, commonly known as "China Beach." This beach is particularly beginner-friendly due to its clear waters and consistent waves. The best time to surf at My Khe is from September to March when the waves typically range from three to six feet. These conditions are ideal for both easy rides and more challenging sessions. The surf community in Da Nang is welcoming and tight-knit, featuring several surf shops and schools that offer affordable lessons and rental equipment. While experienced surfers can take on larger swells during the peak season, beginners will find gentler waves in the early morning. If you’re new to surfing, consider starting with a sunrise session for calmer waters and stunning views.

Nha Trang

Nha Trang, located further down the coast, is a popular destination for locals and tourists due to its vibrant city atmosphere and luxurious beach resort vibe. Although Nha Trang has a limited surfing season from November to March, its mild waters and beach facilities make it an attractive spot for visitors. The best surfing location in Nha Trang is Bai Dai Beach, approximately 25 kilometres from the city centre. This beach is ideal for beginner surfers who want to practice in a relaxed environment, as it features soft sand and gentle waves. Numerous surf schools in the area offer lessons and board rentals, making it accessible for anyone looking to get started. While the waves in Nha Trang may be calm for experienced surfers, the tranquil surroundings and crystal-clear waters provide an excellent backdrop for those who wish to learn or simply enjoy the water.

Vung Tau

Located about 100 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau is a popular weekend getaway for locals, thanks to its vibrant beaches and relaxed atmosphere. From December to March, Vung Tau offers consistent, beginner-friendly waves, creating excellent conditions for surfing. The main surfing beach in the area is Back Beach (Bai Sau), where the waves typically range from two to four feet. Vung Tau's close proximity to the city makes it convenient for short visits, and there are many surf schools and rental shops available. Local surfers eager to share advice and experiences often visit this area, providing a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the local Vietnamese surf culture.

Phan Rang

One of Vietnam's lesser-known yet increasingly popular surf scenes is Phan Rang, located between Nha Trang and Mui Ne. This destination offers tranquility and more challenging waves, making it an excellent choice for surfers seeking consistent swells and uncrowded beaches. Phan Rang is better suited for intermediate and advanced surfers, as the waves can be larger and more powerful than those in Mui Ne or Nha Trang. While there are great surfing spots throughout the year, the best time to surf in Phan Rang is from November to March. The nearby Nui Chua National Park, with its stunning landscapes and unique coastal rock formations, provides a serene backdrop for surfing. Since Phan Rang is still developing as a surfing destination, bringing your own board, if possible, is advisable, as rental options may be limited.

Tips

Following local beach regulations and surf etiquette while surfing in Vietnam is important. Although most locals are welcoming and friendly to visitors, showing respect and patience can make a positive difference. A great way to connect with locals is to learn a few Vietnamese phrases, such as "Xin chào" (hello) and "Cảm ơn" (thank you). If you're new to surfing, taking some lessons to understand the basics and improve your skills is highly recommended.

Board rentals are available at most beaches, but it's advisable to bring your own equipment if you plan to visit more remote areas like Phan Rang or Con Dao. Don't forget to pack sunscreen, as Vietnam's tropical heat can be intense throughout the year.
