Nestled in the heart of the Annapurna region, the Mardi Himal Trek is one of Nepal's best-kept secrets. Often overshadowed by the more famous trails like the Annapurna Circuit and Everest Base Camp, this trek offers a blend of diverse landscapes and a tranquil environment. For those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, Mardi Himal provides an unforgettable experience.

Starting The Journey

The journey begins in Pokhara, a popular gateway to numerous trekking routes in Nepal. From Pokhara, a short drive takes you to the small village of Kande, the official starting point of the Mardi Himal Trek. As you set out on the trail, you are immediately immersed in lush forests where rhododendrons and oak trees create a canopy overhead. The gentle ascent offers a perfect introduction to the trek, gradually preparing you for the more challenging days ahead.

Forest Camp To High Camp

After the first night at Australian Camp, the trek continues through picturesque villages like Deurali and Forest Camp. The trail meanders through dense forests where the air is filled with bird sounds and rustling leaves. As you gain altitude, the landscape begins to change and the dense forest gives way to meadows and panoramic views of the Annapurna range.

The ascent to High Camp is one of the most rewarding parts of the trek. At around 3,580 metres, High Camp offers beautiful views of Mardi Himal, Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain) and the Annapurna massif. The sunset and sunrise views from here are nothing short of spectacular with the snow-capped peaks glowing in the soft light.

Reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp

The highlight of the trek is the journey to the Mardi Himal Base Camp which is situated at 4,500 metres. This part of the trek is more challenging with steep ascents and rocky paths but the effort is well worth it. As you make your way up, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged with jagged rocks and patches of snow. Standing at Base Camp you are treated to a close-up view of the majestic Mardi Himal and the awe-inspiring Annapurna range.

Descending Through Siding Village

Mardi, Nepal

After the exhilarating climb to the Mardi Himal Base Camp, the descent takes you through the charming village of Siding. This part of the trek offers a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the local Gurung people. The villagers' warm hospitality and the serene beauty of the terraced fields and quaint houses make for a memorable experience. Siding Village perfectly contrasts against the high-altitude landscapes, allowing you to unwind and reflect on the incredible journey.

Tips For Trekkers

The Mardi Himal Trek is considered moderately suitable for novice and experienced trekkers. The best time to undertake it is during the pre-monsoon (March to May) and post-monsoon (September to November) seasons when the weather is clear and the views are spectacular. Be well-prepared by carrying appropriate trekking gear including warm clothing, sturdy boots and a good-quality sleeping bag.

While teahouses along the trail provide basic accommodation and meals, carrying some snacks and water purification tablets is advisable. Hiring a local guide or joining a trekking group can enhance your experience, providing valuable cultural insights and ensuring your safety on the trail.

Getting There

To reach the Mardi Himal Trek, start by flying into Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal. From Kathmandu, take a domestic flight or bus to Pokhara. From Pokhara, drive to Kande, the starting point of the trek.
