Jules Verne published his iconic novel, 'Around the World in Eighty Days,' in 1872. Ever since then, people have taken up the trend and managed to span the world in a matter of 80 days. The most recent addition in the list of such people are a friend duo from Texas, USA, named Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip, both 81 years young. These intrepid travellers are breaking the mould of conventional travel with their remarkable escapades.

Ellie, a seasoned documentary photographer, and Sandy, a respected physician and lecturer, set out on a mission to explore the far reaches of the world in 2023. The trip started with a ride first to Argentina on January 11. From there on, the iconic duo spanned sites ranging from Taj Mahal to the bustling streets of Tokyo to the mystical Easter Island, the Arctic Circle where they came across reindeers, saw the remarkable Northern Lights and much more.

Ellie and Sandy have an unconventional approach to travel. They prioritise experiences over luxury and comfort. They avoid meticulously planned itineraries and prefer independent exploration. Spontaneity is the key to their travels. As they eloquently express on their blog, "Our greatest joy is mingling with the locals... Nothing ever goes as planned, and fortunately, we wouldn't have it any other way."

The duo does not just share a passion for travel but also expands it to documentation and archival. They have a dedicated Instagram account with followers exceeding 30,000. Through their lens, they inspire others to embrace the spirit of adventure and to seek fulfilment in the richness of human connection found across the globe.

Hamby and Hazelip have travelled to 18 countries across all seven continents, making their journey awe-inspiring. Though originally they intended to start their adventures in 2022, coinciding with their 80th birthday, the Covid pandemic disrupted their plans, causing a delay in their remarkable expedition.

Hazelip reflected on her decision to embark on an epic voyage at 81. She believes this is the "perfect age" to set out on such a venture, as wisdom comes with age, and decision-making becomes more enjoyable. Hazelip also expressed her appreciation for the beauty around her and her ability to fully immerse herself in it. To her, this juncture in life represents an opportune moment to revel in the splendour of the world, a sentiment she holds with deep gratitude.
