When Life Happens

There’s a certain thrill in planning the perfect vacation—poring over maps, reading reviews, and crafting an itinerary that promises an unforgettable experience. But sometimes, despite all the planning, fate has other plans

So much thought goes into planning a perfect vacation. We devoted months to crafting the perfect itinerary for our Norwegian trip, from hiking into hilly villages and boat tours into the fjords and indulgent meals at renowned restaurants. Each detail was thoroughly researched and booked on time. However, fate had other plans.

My mother-in-law, who was to accompany us and had been the driving force behind our travel plans, fell sick just a few days before the trip. What we thought was a hiccup turned out to be a tragedy. Diagnosed with a serious illness, she had to be hospitalised. In an instant, our carefully laid vacation plans dissolved into uncertainty.

Having taken many unplanned trips before, my wife and I took pride in how adept we were at navigating uncertainties that popped up while on the go. We thought these surprises had fortified us. But we were wrong. The news of her illness shocked us.

The lessons learnt about gratitude became an unexpected souvenir from a journey that never happened

One minute, we were packing our bags with swimsuits, hiking gear, and travel guides, and the next, we were huddled in a hospital waiting room. As we sat by her bedside in the hospital, the images of snow-capped hills and blue fjords that had filled my mind were replaced by the sterile white walls of the medical ward. The contrast was stark.

As hours turned into days, the panic began to subside, and moments of clarity emerged. The forced pause allowed us to reflect on the true essence of a vacation. We realised it wasn't about visiting the places or checking off the activities planned, but it was about sharing experiences. While we had initially planned this vacation to fulfil her desire to visit Norway, it was meant to bring the family together. In that hospital room, I realised that without her, the vacation would have felt incomplete.

As I write this, sitting beside my mother-in-law, I realise that even though our trip had to be cancelled, we began a new journey—of empathy and resilience. Each day of her recovery became a shared joy. It was not her battle alone; we were on this journey together, cruising alongside her the unpredictability of life's twists and turns.

Our cancelled vacation became a reminder of the fragility of plans. We had planned each day meticulously to the hour, and here were we, on a different adventure altogether. Although the Norwegian fjords remain a dream deferred, the lessons learnt about gratitude and prioritising what truly matters became an unexpected souvenir from a journey that never happened.
