Japanese actor Kōji Yakusho won the best actor gong at the 2023 Festival de Cannes for his portrayal of a sanitation worker in director Wim Wenders’ film “Perfect Days.” Yakusho plays Hirayama, a contemplative middle-aged man who lives a life of modesty and serenity, spending his days balancing his job as a dutiful caretaker of Tokyo’s numerous public toilets with a passion for music, literature and photography.
