Pride Month 2024: LGBTQ-Friendly Spaces In Kolkata

From pop-up events to cafes and karaoke nights at popular establishments, these are the spaces in Kolkata that nurture and support the LGBTQ community

OT Staff

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of inclusivity and authenticity, leading to a rapid rise in the number of queer-friendly spaces worldwide. In Kolkata, several such spaces have emerged and evolved over time. Presently, the city is home to a handful of venues dedicated to embracing and celebrating the LGBTQIA community. Here's a list.

Porshi

This café is operated by Sappho for Equality, an organisation based in Kolkata, India. They work for the rights of lesbians, bisexual women, and trans men in Eastern India. The café, called Porshi, serves as a training centre with canteen facilities and acts as a safe space for the queer trans community. The place is adorned with frames from various Pride walks, and with queer books and journals. It has a giant Pride flag in the background. The menu at Porshi offers Bengali dishes with a touch of Western influence. Additionally, there is a Queer library alongside works on the history of the LGBTQIA+ movement, emphasising the need to continue fighting for equality on a daily basis. Porshi also serves as a space for creative expressions of queer trans artists and hosts events such as film screenings and workshops.

Address: P-189, Jodhpur Park, Kolkata - 700068. Landmark: Next to Pathfinder institution. Timings: 12 - 8 pm (closed on Mondays)

Kitty Su

The vibrant Kitty Su club hosts for an array of pop-ups and events at The Lalit Great Eastern in Kolkata, with a particular emphasis on providing a platform of support for the LGBTQ community. On June 15 this year, the opulent Great Ball Room within The Lalit Great Eastern Kolkata was transformed into a hub of energy and celebration as it played host to the Kitty Su Asia Takeover tour X Pink Party. This electrifying event was a fitting tribute to International Pride Month and featured an awe-inspiring performance by none other than the internationally acclaimed drag artist, Zepee who did a rendition of "Don't Cha" by The Pussycat Dolls. Keep tabs here for upcoming events.

Karaoke Nights

Trinca's is a legendary Park Street joint

Park Street has always been the top choice for special celebrations and romantic dining experiences, housing legendary establishments like the Blue Fox, Trincas, Mocambo, and Flurys. While some places have closed down, Trincas has recently undergone a transformation and has reintroduced live music events. Last year, the Kolkata Pride began hosting Karaoke Nights at Tavern by Trincas to create a safe and inclusive space for the queer community and allies to celebrate. On June 13, the Tavern marked a year of unforgettable karaoke nights with an exceptional live band. The karaoke is hosted every Thursday evening. Head out and participate for a great night out.

Address: 17, Mother Teresa Sarani, behind Trincas Restaurant, near The Park Hotel, out gate, Taltala, Kolkata, West Bengal 700016
