Ever since Prime Minister Modi spent a contemplative respite at the Lakshadweep Islands and posted pictures of it on his social media, the islands have found themselves caught up in a whirlwind and are being recommended by people left and right. The tropical paradise nestled in the Arabian Sea, is a group of 36 exquisite coral islands known for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life.  While this archipelago offers an idyllic getaway, planning a trip to Lakshadweep requires careful consideration of various factors to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. As de rigeur we have compiled a list of all the key details you must bear in mind while planning a trip to Lakshadweep.

Necessary Permits

Availing necessary permits

Before embarking on a journey to Lakshadweep, it's crucial to obtain a permit. Entry to Lakshadweep is restricted, and requires a Protected Area Permit (PAP) issued by the Lakshadweep Administration, based in Kochi. The islands are regulated to protect their fragile ecosystems and maintain their untouched beauty. Permits can be acquired through the Lakshadweep Administration's website or authorised travel agents. To avail the permit, you must fill in the application that requires basic details such as names, address, purpose of visit, travel dates and places on the itinerary. Ensure that you apply well in advance, as the process may take some time.

Once you obtain the clearance certificate, you must either download the entry permit or get it in person from the Lakshadweep Administration office in Willingdon Island, Kochi. When you reach Lakshadweep, you must submit this entry permit to the station house officer in Lakshadweep. Note that the PAP is valid for 30 days from the date of issue and costs INR 300 per person for all ages. In addition to PAP, travellers will also have to pay the Green Tax of INR 300 upon arrival at the Agatti airport.

To initiate your process to avail the necessary permits, visit the state government's website.

Things To Carry

When preparing for your trip to Lakshadweep, it is crucial to consider a few essential considerations to ensure a hassle-free experience. Firstly, carry a printout of your permit and a government-issued photo ID, as these are mandatory for island entry and any security checks you may encounter. While credit cards are accepted in some places, it is recommended to carry sufficient cash for small purchases and transactions in local markets.

If you are travelling by air, make sure to pack light, as the aircraft are small and have limited capacity. Given the tropical climate of Lakshadweep, it is advised to protect yourself from the sun and insects by packing high-SPF sunscreen and mosquito repellent. If you love water activities, consider bringing your snorkelling gear for a more comfortable and personalised experience, even though rentals may be available.

Lastly, it is wise to pack a basic first aid kit with essential medications, as medical facilities on the islands may be limited. Taking care of these details ensures a smooth and enjoyable exploration of this tropical paradise.

Cost Estimation

Lakshadweep is considered a luxurious destination, with relatively high costs for accommodation, food, and activities. Unfortunately, there is no tourist infrastructure for backpackers, and the cheapest sports tours start at around INR 10,000 for four days. According to some data from travellers' records, the islands can cost between INR 60,000 and INR 150,000 per person, including airfare, for a five-day trip. Budget-conscious travellers should plan accordingly, taking into account the expenses associated with permits, transportation, and island activities.

Flights from Kochi to Delhi can cost you INR 12,000 per person for a round trip. Additionally, the inter-island ferry ranges from INR 2,000 to INR 8,000 per person for a round trip. When at the islands, you can consider staying at budget guesthouses in Agatti Island that costs around INR 1,500 to INR 2,000 per night. You also retain the option of moderately expensive cottages in Bangaram Island costing INR 15,000 for a night. For luxury options, you can head to the Kavratti Island which has air-conditioned suites at INR 9,000 per night.

Indulgence Cost

At Lakshadweep Islands, travellers revel in the water activities that the azure waters offer. You can go canoeing at Minicoy Islands or choose to go snorkelling (INR 1,000), scuba diving (INR 3,500) or fishing (INR 1,000).

Sightseeing around the area considering travel and ticket logistics may cost you around INR 1,000 to INR 1,500 per person. You can also visit local villages and learn the local traditions and culture, witness traditional boat building and enjoy Maldivian performances.

Additionally, the islands are also famous for their ayurvedic massages and spa treatments that you can indulge in for a thoroughly relaxing experience.

Clothes To Carry

Clothes to pack for a tropical trip

As Lakshadweep has a tropical climate, lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended. Swimsuits, flip-flops, and comfortable beachwear are essentials. However, it's advisable to dress modestly when exploring local villages and interacting with the islanders to respect their cultural norms. The traditional attire of Lakshadweep is the Kasavu Mundu, a white cloth with golden borders. Women also wear the Kachi, a garb similar to the lungi, and long headdresses called Thattam.

Weather

An evening in Lakshadweep

The climate of Lakshadweep is tropical, which means that the temperatures are warm all year round. For visitors, the best time to go is from October to March, as the weather is pleasant during this period, and the sea is calm. This allows for a wide range of water activities. However, it's advisable to avoid the monsoon season, which lasts from June to September. This is because the region experiences heavy rainfall, and the seas are rough during this time, which makes it unsuitable for water activities. The best season to visit the islands would be from October to February.

Alcohol Rules

Lakshadweep has strict regulations for the consumption of alcohol. As a primarily Muslim region, the sale and use of alcohol are restricted. Visitors are advised against carrying alcohol to the islands. However, some resorts and hotels with permits may serve alcoholic beverages to their guests. It is crucial to respect the local customs and adhere to the alcohol rules during your stay.

Local Culture

The main languages spoken in Lakshadweep are Malayalam and Mahl. However, English is also commonly understood in areas that are popular among tourists. It is important to remember that Islam heavily influences the local culture, and visitors are expected to respect and follow local customs. To avoid any unintentional offence, it is advised to dress modestly, avoid public displays of affection, and always ask for permission before taking photographs of the locals.
