Located in the Idukki district and barely half an hour from the more popular Munnar, Devikulam is an ideal offbeat getaway with its many picturesque attractions

If you are planning a quiet, relaxing getaway, Munnar is sure to be on your list for all the right reasons. But just 8 km from it is another hidden gem you must consider—Devikulam. Located in the Idukki district and barely half an hour from the popular hill station, Devikulam is just as magical with its rolling hills but way less crowded. While it comparatively has fewer touristy attractions than Munnar, the few—such as the Sita Devi Lake, the verdant tea plantations, the gushing falls, and the viewpoints—are worth exploring, even if on a day trip.

Places To Visit In Devikulam

Devikulam promises an immersive experience in the region's unfiltered nature. From touring the swathing plantations to spending a day trekking to hidden waterfalls, here are the best places to visit in Devikulam.

Sita Devi Lake

Sita Devi Lake

Sita Devi Lake, also known as Devi Lake, holds sacred significance in Devikulam. Legend has it that Sita bathed in its waters. Surrounded by lush greenery, fragrant tea plantations, and a forest-clad mini-hill, the lake is perfect for a family picnic. It is also accessible by a mountain trail through jungles, offering a chance for an exciting forest walk.

Thoovanam Falls

Thoovanam Falls

Located deep within the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, the Thoovanam Falls, formed by the Pambar River, paints an ethereal picture once you see it. Reaching the falls is as exciting as it lies at the end of a 4-km moderately difficult trek beginning from the Alampetty check post.

Pallivasal Falls

Lying in close proximity to the Sita Devi Lake, the Pallivasal Falls attract many keen nature lovers and tourists from nearby. The serene atmosphere surrounding the falls is ideal for enjoying a picnic with your friends and family.

Attala Rock Shelter

A significant tourist spot in Devikulam, Attala Rock Shelter in Idukki district boasts an elevated location with stunning architecture. It is situated close to Kavakudi village and showcases 94 painted motifs, including abstract images of humans and animals.

Hill View Park

If you want to catch postcard-worthy shots of the rolling hills or of elephants in their natural habitat, make your way to this viewpoint perched atop a hill. Located near the Idukki Arch Dam and Cheuthiny Dam, the park spans 8 acres and houses diverse plant species. You can also enjoy activities like pedal boating.

Where To Stay In Devikulam Hills

Stay options within Devikulam are few and far between. However, since it is located just a few kilometres away from Munnar, it is ideal to halt there and travel to Devikulam by car.

In Munnar, accommodations range from resorts to five-star hotels to homestays and everything in between. You can book a room at one of the many stays listed on Kerala Tourism's official website. All of them fall approximately within a 10 km radius of Devikulam Hills.

Where To Eat In Devikulam Hills

If you are in Kerala, you are in for some fantastic food. From seafood to vegetarian dishes like thoran and avial, the local restaurants have mastered the region's flavour. However, like hotels, there are not many options within Devikulam. It is best to find restaurants in towns and hill stations located nearby within a 10 km radius, such as Munnar or Pallivasal or Chinnakanal.

In Munnar, head to Rapsy Restaurant or Hotel Sri Nivas for local fares, and Hill Spice for multiple cuisines such as North Indian, Italian and Chinese. The KTTDC Tea County Restaurant is good for a more upscale dining experience.

Best Time To Visit

October to March are the best months to visit Devikulam Hills and the nearby locales, such as Munnar. The weather during these months is pleasant. However, nights can be chilly, so carry at least one jacket with you.

How To Reach

Devikulam boasts excellent road connectivity and is situated about 140 km away from Cochin International Airport. Convenient transportation options such as regular buses and taxis are easily accessible from Munnar, the nearest major town.
